ABOUT

My sonata for Two Pianos Op.117 (2011) was commissioned by the Washington State College of Liberal Arts and School of Music Artist Trust, the National Federation of Music Clubs and Washington State Music Teachers Association for the piano duo 88 Squared. It was premiered on February 4th, 2012 at Kimbrough Concert Hall, Washington State University.

The work is in four movements.  The opening Lento is in an arc-like form.  The second movement combines scherzo and march-like elements, with an introduction that is repeated palindromically at the end. Another Lento movement follows and the work closes with a virtuosic contrapuntal workout for the two pianists, the ending to be played “as fast as possible.”

REVIEWS

“There’s not a dull moment in any of this music…the slow III is a miracle of effective and expressive harmony, and the contrapuntal dexterity in II and IV, both in quick tempos, yeilds some of the most exciting music in that style.”

“Liebermann’s Sonata for Two Pianos (2011) is one of his finest works...splendidly crafted score…”
