Liebermann Cadenzas on DG

Pianist Hai-Kyung Suh has released a recording of four Mozart Piano Concertos on Deutsche Grammophon which includes Liebermann's cadenzas for the Concerto No.21 in C major K467. Suh is accompanied by the Academy of St Martin in the Fields with the legendary Sir Neville Marriner conducting.

Aristo Sham Wins Prize for Best Performance of Two Impromptus

20-year-old Hong Kong native Aristo Sham was declared the winner of the 2016 New York International Piano Competition, also winning the prize for Best Performance of the Liebermann Two Impromptus Op.131, which were commissioned by the Stecher & Horowitz Foundation for the competition and required of all the contestants. Aristo will give the official world-premiere of the Impromptus at his debut recital at the Phillips Collection in Washington DC in November.

San Francisco Ballet announces Frankenstein North American Premiere as part of 2017 season

San Francisco Ballet has announced their upcoming 2017 season which features the North American Premiere of Frankenstein, a three act ballet with music by Lowell Liebermann, sets and costumes by John MacFarlane and choreography by Liam Scarlett. Frankenstein will have ten performances in February. The production is a co-production with the Royal Ballet which presented the world premiere in May. For more information, see here.

Frankenstein to be Presented Live in Cinemas and on BP Big Screens Around the World

The Royal Ballet's production of Frankenstein will be relayed live in Cinemas and outdoor big screens world-wide on May 18th. The big screen broadcasts are sponsored by British Petroleum. For more information, see here.

Frankenstein Premiered at Royal Ballet

The Royal Ballet presented the world premiere of Liebermann's score for Frankenstein, a three act ballet on May 4th, 2016 at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. The Royal Opera House Orchestra was conducted by Koen Kessels, sets and costumes were by John MacFarlane and choreography by was by Liam Scarlett.

Liebermann returns to Cliburn at the Modern Series

Lowell Liebermann will return on October 11th to the Cliburn at the Modern Series, held at Fort Worth's Modern Art Museum by the Van Cliburn Foundation. The all-Liebermann program will include his Sonata for Violin and Piano Op.46, Appalachian Liebeslieder Op.54 and Piano Trio No.2 Op.77. For more information, click here.

Emerson Quartet Premieres String Quartet #5

The Emerson String Quartet will present the world-premiere of Lowell Liebermann's String Quartet No.5, Op.126 at the Chamber Arts Series of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. The new quartet was commissioned for the Emerson Quartet by Music Accord, and will be featured on several of the Emerson's upcoming concerts this season, including at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. "Ice Music" Premieres in Chapel Hill

Lowell Liebermann's Ice Music, a multimedia collabaration with Flautist/Photographer Brooks DeWetter-Smith and choreographer Carey McKinley will receive its world-premiere on September 12th as part of the University of North Carolina's Process Series. Liebermann Performs "Four Seasons" at Santa Fe

The composer served as pianist in the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival performance of Liebermann's Four Seasons, to poems by Edna St. Vincent Millay and co-commissioned by the festival. Mezzo Sasha Cooke was the extraordinary vocalist, supported by David Shifrin, clarinet; Ida Kavafian, violin; Steven Tenenbom, viola and Peter Stumpf, cello. Read James Keller's review here.

 

Dorian Gray Revived at Aspen

Liebermann's first opera The Picture of Dorian Gray received a stunning new production at the Aspen Music Festival in July. The production was directed by Gregory Fortner, with sets by Christopher Fitzer, costumes by Summer Lee Jack and lighting by Lloyd Sobel. The talented young cast included (above left to right) Johnathan McCullogh as Lord Henry, Andy Dwan as Basil and Christian Sanders as Dorian.

Liebermann Honored by Concert Artists Guild

Lowell Liebermann was given the 2014 Concert Artists Guild Virtuoso Award for Excellence in the Arts at CAG's annual gala dinner held on June 3rd at the Tribeca Rooftop. Following the presentation of the award, Liebermann performed the 3rd and 4th movements of his Piano Quintet with the PUBLIQuartet, and Nadejda Vlaeva played two movements from his Gargoyles. Previous recipients of the award include Andre Watts, the Emerson Quartet, Dave Brubeck and Ned Rorem and Sharon Isbin.

Liebermann Wins Inaugural Virgil Thomson Award

Lowell Liebermann has been awarded the inaugural Virgil Thomson Award, a $40,000 prize given for outstanding composition of vocal works.

The honor was announced jointly Tuesday by the Virgil Thomson Foundation and the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters.

Dorian Gray at Aspen

The Aspen Music Ferstival has announced a new production of Liebermann's first opera, The Picture of Dorian Gray, based on the Oscar Wilde novel with a libretto by the composer. The production will be directed by Gregory Fortner with the Aspen Opera Center Orchestra conducted by Michael Christie. Liebermann Appointed Head of Mannes Composition Department

Lowell Liebermann has been appointed Head of the Composition Department at Mannes College The New School For Music in New York City, by Mannes Dean Richard Kessler. Liebermann joined the Mannes Composition Department in 2012, where he teaches private lessons in composition, and conducts MACE (the Mannes American Composers Ensemble,) a large ensemble dedicated to the works of living American composers.

Arizona Friends of Chamber Music Commissions another Work

Following the highly successful premiere of his 3rd Piano Trio, Arizona Friends of Chamber Music has commissioned a second work from Lowell Liebermann, this time a trio for Clarinet, Viola and Piano. The new work will be premiered during the 2015-16 season.

The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra has Commissioned a work from Lowell Liebermann as part of its "New Jersey Roots" project. (Liebermann is a resident of Weehawken, NJ.) The work will be premiered during the 2013-14 season under the baton of Music Director Jacques Lacombe.

"Euphotic" receives its world premiere

Liam Scarlett's second ballet to a Liebermann score was a triumph at its world premiere in Miami on January 11th. Commissioned by Miami City Ballet and set to Liebermann's Second Piano Concerto, "Euphotic" follows on the heels of Scarlett's ecstatically received ballet "Viscera" which was set to Liebermann's 1st Piano Concerto and premiered by Miami City Ballet last season, with a UK premiere by the Royal Ballet in London in November. Piano Trio No.3 To Be Premiered

Liebermann's Trio No.3 for Violin Cello and Piano Op.122 will be premiered on Wednesday, January 23rd by Trio Solisti at the Tucson Convention Center. Commissioned by the Arizona Friends of Chamber Music, the Trio is the fiftieth commission in the organization's series of commissions of contemporary American composers. UK Premiere of Viscera

Liam Scarlett's ballet Viscera, set to Liebermann's First Piano Concerto was given a rapturously-received UK premiere by the Royal Ballet at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London on November 3rd. Commissioned and premiered by Miami City Ballet, Viscera recieved similarly glowing reviews at its world premiere in Miami.

Mediterranean Cruise

In October, Lowell Liebermann was artistic director and pianist for another Mediterranean Classical Music Cruise for Travel Dynamics International, with an incredible itinerary from Istanbul to Casablanca. Along with mezzo-soprano Susanne Mentzer, violinist Ida Kavafian, violist Steven Tenenbom and pianist William Hobbs, the group gave five concerts with repetoire that ranged from Bach to Liebermann.

Premiere, Recording and Publication of New Song

Liebermann's "An Opera House" Op.120 to a poem by Amy Lowell, was premiered on September 28th by soprano Sara Jakubiak with the composer at the piano as part of the opening festivities of the new National Opera Center in New York City. Commissioned by Opera America as part of the celebratory "Opera America Songbook," the recording of the song as well as its publication by Schott were released simultaneously.

Liebermann appointed to Mannes Faculty

Lowell Liebermann has been appointed to the faculty of the Mannes College at the New School for Music. He will teach composition lessons, and conduct a newly-formed large contemporary performance ensemble called MACE: the Mannes American Composers Ensemble. The ensemble will feature the works of living American composers, performing concerts at the Mannes Concert Hall and other off-campus venuew, including Alice Tully Hall.

Chamber Music Northwest, Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival and Celbrity Series of Boston Commissions Work for David Shifrin, Sasha Cooke and Opus One

ISO Commissions Liebermann for Carnegie Hall Premiere

The InterSchool Orchestras of New York have commssioned a new work from Lowell Liebermann to be premiered at their 40th Anniversary Gala Concert at New York City's Carnegie Hall. The work will be performed by Metropolitan Opera Orchestra Principal Flautist Stefan Ragnar Hoskuldsson with the ISO Orchestra conducted by Music Director Jeffrey Grogan on February 2nd 2012.

University of North Carolina Commissions Multi-Media Work

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has commissioned music from Lowell Liebermann for a muti-media work featuring the flute playing and photography of Brooks De Wetter-Smith, with choreography. Projections for the work will consist of De Wetter-Smith's photographs of the Antarctic. The music will be scored for flute, clarinet, violin, cello and percussion.

Washington State University has commssioned a Sonata for Two Pianos from Lowell Liebermann for the piano duo 88-squared, comprised of husband and wife pianists Jeffrey and Karen Savage. The new Sonata will be premiered during the 2011-12 season.

Liebermann to conduct premiere of "Three American Sketches"

Liebermann's Three American Sketches Op.111 will receive its world premiere performance by the Evansville Symphony under the composer's direction. The 9-minute work is in three movements, respectively titled Amber Waves Of Grain, Purple Mountain Majesties, and Sea To Shining Sea. Based on the patriotic song "America the Beautiful," each movement is built from the notes in the original song that correspond to the words of each title.

Music From Angel Fire Commissions Piano Quartet for Opus One

Lowell Liebermann has been commissioned by Music From Angel Fire to write a new Piano Quartet for Opus One (Ida Kavafian, violin; Steven Tenenbom, viola; Peter Wiley, cello; and Anne-Marie McDermott, piano.) The new work will be premiered this summer at Musc From Angel Fire in Angel Fire, New Mexico.

Liebermann's 4th Cello Sonata Premiered at Wigmore Hall

Lowell Liebermann's Sonata No.4 for Cello and Piano Op.108 will be premiered by 14-year-old cellist Joel Sandelson and pianist Thomas Blach at the Wigmore Hall in London on March 4th. Commissioned by Martin Feldman for Joel Sandelson, the 14-minute work is in one movement.

Presser Releases Full Score of Trumpet Concerto


Theodore Presser Company has released the full study score of Liebermann's Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra, Op.64 (416-41369). Commissioned by John Marsteller and Helen Marsteller Treutel in memory of Juilliard trumpet teacher Edward Treutel, the work recieved a critically acclaimed premiere by trumpeter Philip Smith with the New York Philharmonic conducted by Kurt Masur.

Liebermann's Second Symphony to be Performed on February 6th

Liebermann's 2nd Symphony, Op.67, will be performed by the Seven Lakes Symphony Orchestra, Wind Symphony, and Chorale in Katy Texas, in a program entitled "America the Beautiful."
The concert will take place at the Seven Lakes High School Performing Arts Center in Katy, Texas, and will be led by Guest Conductor Jeffrey Grogan of the New Jersey Philharmonic. Lowell Liebermann will attend as Guest Composer. Originally commissioned by the Dallas Symphony, Lowell Liebermann’s Second Symphony is a monumental work featuring full choir and orchestra with an augmented brass ensemble. The text for the work was adapted by the composer from the poetry of Walt Whitman.

This performance marks a notable return to Texas for the 10 year anniversary of the original world premiere performance in February of 2000.

Presser Releases Full Score of Flute Concerto


Theodore Presser Company has released the full study score of Liebermann's Concerto for Flute and Orchestra, Op.39 (416-41186). Written for legendary flautist Sir James Galway and premiered by him with the St. Louis Symphony conducted by Leonard Slatkin, the work has gone on to become one of the most frequently performed American Flute Concertos

New Work on Classic Children's Tale "The Velveteen Rabbit"

The Westerville Symphony (Westerville, Ohio) has commissioned a work for Narrator and 15 instruments based on the classic children's story "The Velveteen Rabbit." The new work will premiere in April 2011 under the direction of conductor Peter Stafford Wilson.

Liebermann and Tessera Quartet to Perform Benefit for Classical Action

Lowell Liebermann will perform his Quintet for Piano and Strings with the dynamic Tessera Quartet in New York City as part of a benefit house concert for Classical Action. The special evening starts at 6:30 on April 27th with cocktails at 6:30 followed by the concert at 7:30. The Quartet will perform music by Beethoven and then be joined by Liebermann for his Quintet. New Liebermann Publications Available from Theodore Presser Company


Theodore Presser Company has released the scores of Liebermann's Nocturne No.9 Op.97 (110-41774) and Nocturne No.10 Op.99 (110-41775) for solo piano. Nocturne No.9 was commissioned by Louis K. and Susan P. Meisel for pianist Nadejda Vlaeva, who premiered it at the Husum International Music Festival in Germany. Nocturne No. 10 was written in memory of Gian-Carlo Menotti and premiered by the composer at the memorial concert held at the Salle Garnier in Monte Carlo.

Liebermann on Jeopardy!


Liebermann's music was featured on the popular Game show "Jeopardy!" aired on February 12th. In the Double Jeopardy! Round, under the category "Chamber Music" following questions about Bach, Schubert and Dvorak, contestant Mark Halpin, a scenic designer from Cold Spring, Kentucky, chose the $1000 question, which was also the Daily Double. Alex Trebek read the following: "A 1996 Sonata by Lowell Liebermann is for flute & this, also a popular pairing at weddings." Contestant Halpin responded correctly with "What is a harp?" We applaud the producers of Jeopardy! for their awareness of contemporary American music!

Liebermann Commissioned by Meet the Composer/Magnum Opus Project

Lowell Liebermann has been commissioned to compose a major work for orchestra through Meet the Composer's Magnum Opus project. The new work will be performed by the Virginia Symphony, the Nashville Symphony and the Marin Symphony with the premiere scheduled for the 2009/10 season. Clarinet Concerto for Consortium of 14 Orchestras

A consortium of some 14 orchestras and organizations have commissioned Liebermann to write a Clarinet Concerto for Jon Manasse, whose recording of Liebermann's Clarinet Quintet has just been released by Koch Classics (see below.) The orchestras include the Dayton Philharmonic, the Las Cruces Symphony, the Evansville Philharmonic, the Bozeman Symphony, the Chappaqua Orchestra, the Erie Philharmonic, the North State Symphony, the Chesapeake Orchestra, the Roanoke Symphony the University of Massachusetts Amherst Symphony and the Juneau Symphony. The other members of the consortium include the clarinet manufacturers Buffet Crampon USA and Van Doren Paris/DANSR, and the Hanson Institute for American Music at the Eastman School of Music. The first performance of the consortium will take place during the 2009/10 season by the Dayton Philharmonic.

Premiere Recordings Released by Koch Classics and MSR Classics


Koch International Classics has released another all-Liebermann recording featuring pianist David Korevaar performing three works never recorded before: the Quintet for Piano and Strings Op.34, the Quintet for Piano, Clarinet and String Trio Op.26 (with clarinettist Jon Manasse) and the Six Songs on Poems of Raymond Carver Op.80 (with baritone Patrick Mason.) The recording has already garnered rave reviews with special kudos to pianist Korevaar.

The enterprising label MSR classics has just released the premiere recording of Liebermann's Nocturne-Fantasy Op.69 performed by the Newman & Oltman Guitar Duo, who commissioned the work. The recording features three other woks commissioned by the duo.
